Archaeology Day has become so popular in recent years -- often filling up in days -- that we are adding a second day this year so that more people can enjoy the experience. Join the professionals as they excavate one of the earliest settlements in Glastonbury. This was the same site excavated at our 2016 Archaeology Day. Dr. Jones has been working on this site since the last dig and stated that this is "arguably the state's most important settler-colonial period site." Artifacts excavated at the site date back to Glastonbury's founding in the 1640s. This site has a rich archaeological and documentary record. Cellar holes provide excellent artifact preservation. Get a glimpse of what early people in Glastonbury ate and the objects they used in daily life. There is also clear evidence of cooperation with local Native people. In fact\, the focus this year will be on one of three possible wigwam features. As a guest archaeologist you'll learn the early history and geology of Glastonbury\, general techniques of identifying and preparing a dig site\, and the general procedures of excavation. The majority of your day will involve partaking in an authentic archaeological dig. You will excavate in prepared grids\, locating\, sifting\, identifying and cataloging your finds. Get your hands dirty both figuratively and literally by becoming an active participant in the unearthing of early Glastonbury history. Space is limited and reservations are required.
