Founded in 1998 in Prague, the Bennewitz Quartet was named after the famous Czech violinist and teacher Antonin Bennewitz (1833-1926), and established its reputation by winning the Osaka (2005) and the Premio Paolo Borciani (2008) competitions. Currently celebrating their 25th anniversary, the quartet is a champion of Czech music, and since the fall of 2017 they have been the ensemble-in residence for the Czech Philharmonic, performing in Prague’s Dvorák Hall. 2024 has been declared The Year of Czech Music, a celebration observed every decade when the year ends in a “4”. The year 2024 also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Bedrich Smetana, the 120th anniversary of the death of Dvorák, and the 170th anniversary of Leoš Janácek. It would only be fitting for the Jorgensen audience to be treated to an all Czech program to honor these important Czech musical milestones.
