Workplace Stress: Five Steps to Regain Your Power by Wendy Garvin Mayo, APRN, ANP-BC

Workplace stress is a widespread issue that many employees experience in silence, and it can have a significant impact on both their physical and mental health. According to the American Institute of Stress (2021), job stress is the leading cause of stress for American adults, with 80% of workers reporting feeling stressed on the job. This is unsurprising given that Americans spend an average of 35 hours per week working. Additionally, work-related stress costs US businesses approximately $300 billion per year in absenteeism, turnover, and decreased productivity (American Institute of Stress, 2021).

To mitigate workplace stress, employees need to take five steps to regain their power. First, it's essential to recognize the definition of workplace stress, which refers to the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the demands of a job don't match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker. Understanding this definition is vital because it enables individuals to identify the sources of their stress and develop effective coping mechanisms.

Second, one of the most powerful ways to cope with workplace stress is through self-awareness. By recognizing stress triggers and learning how to manage emotions, employees can take control of their stress levels and reduce their impact. Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help individuals practice the power of the pause, providing an opportunity to process thoughts and pivot reactions to align with their purpose.

Third, knowing one's added value is another crucial factor in managing workplace stress. Understanding your strengths and how they can benefit your company can increase your confidence and sense of capability, ultimately reducing stress. By recognizing unique skills and qualities, employees can leverage their strengths to navigate stress in the workplace effectively.

Fourth, mindset plays a vital role in coping with workplace stress. Instead of dwelling on negative aspects of the job, employees can focus on the positive. By looking for opportunities to learn and grow, approaching work with a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm, individuals can build a resilient mindset that equips them with the mental fortitude to handle stressful situations.

Finally, mastering the art of courageous conversations can significantly reduce workplace stress. Speaking up for oneself and addressing conflicts in a constructive way can improve relationships with coworkers and reduce tension in the workplace. By learning effective communication skills, employees can engage in open and honest discussions that help resolve conflicts and prevent future stressors. In conclusion, workplace stress is a prevalent issue that can significantly impact both employees and businesses. Understanding the definition of workplace stress, practicing self-awareness, recognizing added value, adopting a positive mindset, and mastering the art of courageous conversations are all powerful tools for reducing stress, regaining power, and improving overall well-being in the workplace.
