Zentangle is the method of creating abstract art through structured patterns. It can be used as a way to cultivate creativity, reduce stress and induce a peaceful and mindful meditative practice through art. In this introductory session, you will learn how to create an intricate and seemingly complex piece of art easily and enjoyably. The purpose of this class is to provide a relaxing and calming experience that you can continue on your own,or even join a community of Tanglers at the Marlborough Arts Center. Zentangle, or “no mistakes” art, offers a way to get a break from stress and learn how to connect with yourself and others to relax and focus on what is important in everyday life.
All you need are a few supplies to get started with Zentangle: a micron pen, graphite pencil, tortillon, and 3.5” or larger square tiles of paper or card stock. A starter kit will be provided for an additional cost. You will learn the philosophy behind Zentangle and patterns and tangling techniques. We will share our tiles in a mosaic to see how our individual creations when combined result in an interesting work of art created by the whole class.
Laura Marks is a certified Zentangle instructor and has been teaching the method in a variety of settings including universities, hospitals, art centers, places of worship and school systems. She has been teaching Zentangle for the Art for Healing Program of Hartford Hospital since 2016, helping cancer survivors and their caregivers. There are no mistakes in Zentangle as it is abstract, and any unintentional line you draw becomes an opportunity for something new; not a mistake. Laura obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1989 and a Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Hartford in 2001. She is currently working on a certification as a health and life coach. Zentangle is a perfect way to help people through expressive art. We are excited to offer this workshop at the Marlborough Arts Center and help us start a group who can “tangle” more on their own and together if they want to be part of a community.
