Hartford Symphony Orchestra Begins Search for Next Music Director
June 23, 2025(Hartford, CT) -June 20, 2025- The Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) has launched a search for a new Music Director to lead the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. This multi-faceted position is critical in defining the HSO’s artistic vision, creating community partnerships, and elevating the musical experience for diverse audiences beginning in September 2027. The search will remain open until Friday, July 25, 2025.
The Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is responsible for maximizing the orchestra’s artistic potential, shaping its role in the communities it serves, and driving audience development and growth. This includes developing and communicating an artistic vision, programming major concert series, selecting repertoire and artists, and leading rehearsals and performances to ever-high artistic standards.
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and inspiring conductor with exceptional musicianship and proven leadership skills. We are looking for a Music Director who will bring deep knowledge of orchestral repertoire across a range of cultural traditions and musical genres, along with passion for exploring innovative and inclusive programming.
Applications will be accepted through Friday, July 25, 2025. Finalists will be invited to lead the orchestra in Masterworks Concert programs during the 2026-2027 season. Finalists will meet with HSO board members, musicians, staff, donors, and community leaders while in Hartford.

Current Music Director Carolyn Kuan will remain with the HSO through the Spring of 2027. Kuan is the HSO’s tenth music director. She began her work in Hartford in January of 2011. She is the first woman and the youngest person ever to hold the position. During her time with the HSO, she has been dedicated to delivering popular programs considered core to HSO’s tradition and innovative offerings designed to attract new audiences.
