NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A marine veteran from South Glastonbury turned a personal battle into a Connecticut-based nonprofit, which helps hundreds of people reconnect with the outdoors.

Open Doors Outdoors is a group in South Glastonbury that takes veterans, their families and young people into the outdoors for reconnection, healthy activity and healing.

Davey Edwards, the group’s founder and executive director, proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He joined Ann Nyberg to tell his story.

There is a mental health crisis among veterans, according to U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs data on the group’s website. Veterans report elevated levels of anxiety, PTSD experiences and elevated rates of depression.
